“El-Rufai Blames Judiciary for Corruption”

Former Governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai, has directly blamed the Nigerian judiciary for fostering corruption and eroding public trust in the justice system. He accused many judges and lawyers of compromising their responsibilities in delivering fair justice.

While speaking on Monday, May 19, 2025, during the Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Bwari Branch, in Abuja, El-Rufai said the Nigerian public has lost faith in the judiciary due to repeated delays in legal proceedings and rulings that many view as biased or externally influenced.

“Our judiciary—tasked with upholding fairness and order—now faces intense scrutiny. People see delayed justice, procedural inefficiencies, and, at times, judicial compromise. These issues erode public confidence,” he stated.

El-Rufai criticized the growing use of ex parte orders in political cases and accused some lawyers of exploiting the court system for political gain.

He pointed to the increase in forum shopping and the manipulation of ex parte orders as evidence that the courts administer law for the benefit of the powerful, rather than justice for all. “Observers who see justice as a tool for the rich and influential may conclude that Nigerian courts merely administer law—not justice,” he added.

El-Rufai further argued that a deep disconnect exists between legal processes and true justice in Nigeria. He claimed the judiciary now operates under the influence of the executive branch.

“In Nigeria, law and justice appear increasingly disconnected. Justice is lacking, and the law seems to bend to the Executive’s will,” he asserted.

He urged legal practitioners to reflect on their roles and renew their commitment to impartial justice.

“As members of the Temple of Justice, you must introspect deeply. Ask yourselves if Justitia remains blind and whether she still holds the scales of justice in true balance,” El-Rufai concluded.
